McDonald's Says Four Bucks For Coffee is Dumb

Sorry I haven't posted in so long, but I've been terribly preoccupied with my job search, hunting for a new apartment, researching martial arts schools, and on top of all that, I had a freak pinkie injury that makes it a pain to type.

Anyway, the good folks over at McDonald's (MCD) are taking some potshots at Starbucks' (SBUX) high-priced coffee and snobby image, complete with a sign that says "four bucks is dumb." It's a bit tacky, especially since the average Starbucks customer doesn't go for the more expensive stuff on the menu like those diarrhea-inducing frappuccinos. But it is a message that could resonate with struggling consumers in a tough economy.

I'm more of an occasional coffee drinker. I drink coffee because I like the way it tastes, not because I need it. (that makes me a different type of coffee snob altogether) And you know what? I don't think Starbucks' coffee tastes very good. Living in Brooklyn, I have access to a fairly wide selection of quality coffee shops serving gourmet expensive stuff that's still cheaper than Starbucks. To my fairly pedestrian taste buds, Starbucks just tastes a little burnt and foul, and that's the primary reason I avoid it. I'm not paying up for coffee that does not taste good to me. And that makes me fart. Like I just had four pounds of BBQ baked beans. Okay, okay, you get the point.

Overpriced coffee is only overpriced if the quality isn't there.

But McDonald's doesn't have anything on The Kid From Brooklyn, who posted this rant on Starbucks a couple years ago:



Now if I was a marketing executive at McDonald's, and could get The Kid From Brooklyn on tape without the curses, I just might have the best viral marketing campaign of the year...
